Wal-Town

Nov 9, 2006

After three years in the making, Wal-Town - the film, directed by Sergeo Kirby, premiered in early September 2006 at the Montreal World Film Festival. After two sell-out screenings at the WFF, it has gone on to screen to a record audience on Radio-Canada and to play at several film festivals across Canada, including in Sudbury, Calgary and Guelph. We will now be taking the film on the road this winter as part of the Wal-Town 2007 Tour!

Kirby's film takes an incisive look at both at Wal-Mart and its impacts on Canadian communities and workers, interviewing local citizens, Wal-Mart employees, community activists, union organisers and municipal politicians. Beyond the tale of Wal-Mart, though, WT is also an exploration of activism and the personal growth that people go through when taking on challenges larger than themselves.

The film is the first of its kind as an exploration of Wal-Mart in Canada, and is a needed first step in the movement towards rethinking how we interact and, ultimately confront, the large multi-national companies in our midst.
